DIY sunglasses holder/display using cardboard tray

For the past few weeks I have been watching DIY spring decor videos systematically, but I mostly see the same things being repeated in every video. I do agree that I get a lot of inspiration from there and it helps me create my own ideas. Last week, I was sort of re-doing my room and I was on the lookout for more organisation ideas for accessories, especially sunglasses and necklaces. Then, I remembered a DIY by Anne Le on YouTube. She did a really chic and cute DIY sunglasses display using a huge picture frame.

(Anne Le's sunglasses display DIY. Image source: Google Images)

I happen to be a huge fan of recycling cardboard. I just think cardboard is pretty versatile and so many wonderful things can be done with it. Trust me, if I was a craft teacher, I would tell my students to never throw away cardboard (and their rooms would end up as messy as mine, muhahaha! ). Anyway, last December, my little brother got some goodies inside a cardboard tray for Qatar National Day.

The minute I saw it, I identified it as DIY potential material and asked him for it. I already knew it would be the perfect sunglasses holder. Thus, for a few months it was lying behind my desk waiting to be turned into something beautiful. Now last week, a day before my math mid-term exam, I unexpectedly got bitten by the DIY bug; I grabbed all the required items and set off to create my low budget sunglasses display/holder.

Materials you will need:

-A cardboard tray (that looks like a picture frame)
-Scissors
-Ruler
-Marker/pen/pencil
-Decorative paper
-Glue
-String/twine
-Nail or something with a sharp point
-Safety pin

How to:

1. Optional step: if you feel like the backing of the tray is not sturdy enough, take a second piece of cardboard, measure it out to the size of the backing and glue it to the tray to make it sturdier.

(Cut out a second piece of cardboard to add to the tray to make it sturdier)

(Measure out the piece of cardboard to the size of the tray backing)

2. Measure the decorative paper to the size of the backing using a pen and ruler; cut it out.

(Choose any decorative paper to add a pop of color to the tray)

(Measure and cut it out to the size of the backing)

3. Glue the decorative paper to the backing to give the display a cute background. (I used a floral pattern)

4. Optional: write any word in the center of the decorative paper just to  make it look pretty. I wrote the word "voila!". You can write something summer related like, "what about summer?" or just anything you like. I did this step towards the end as touch up.

(Glue the decorative paper to the backing of the tray)

5. Lay out your sunglasses on the tray and decide where you want the string to be. Mark the points where you want the holes on the frame of the tray to tie the string to.

6. Using a nail, make holes (ask an adult to do this step, if you are a child).

(Take a sharp object/nail and a piece of string/twine/ribbon of your choice)

(Using the nail, make a hole on the frame to put the string through)

7. This step is a bit complicated. Secure one end of the string with a safety pin. Now run the safety pin into the hole, head first, to widen the hole. When the string reaches through to the back, tie two knots to secure it and remove the safety pin.

8. Secure the other end of the string with the safety pin and repeat step 7.

(Secure one end of string with safety pin)

(Push the safety pin through the hole, head first)

(Pull the pin until the string is tightly held at the front. Then tie two knots to secure it. Separate the safety pin from the string)

(Two rows of string to hold the sunglasses)

 10. And, you're pretty much done!

VOILA! The final product... {Retrica just makes everything better}

If you want to, you can decorate the frame of the tray with washi tape or paint it any bright spring color.

Now display all the lovely shades you have. If you are the "out of sight, out of mind" type of person, then you won't forget the shades you currently have anymore.

Have a nice day!

Spring break, finally!

"The time is over, so girls we will meet after the break. Assalamu'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuhu", said the math professor.

"Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wabarakatuhu", we replied in chorus.

I gave a deep sigh of relief. My last class before the spring break was finally over. There was still an hour left before I could board the bus. My friend and I left for the cafeteria and we chatted for about an hour and when it was almost time, we bid our goodbyes and left in opposite directions. In the bus, I was heavy lidded and kept swaying back and forth under the cold A/C air. I was dropped first and ran home excitedly. At last I could do things that were pending for a long time. Blogging was one of them.

So here I am, sitting bored in a farm, 30 kilometres away from home, exactly a day later, wildly typing away in my iPhone. Yes folks, my spring break has just started. It's only a week long but I intend to make the most of it. A lot has happened in the past few months since I started university. Education though overall positive, is a very complicated process. It is something very powerful, almost impossible to explain in words. People have their own way of expressing it. However, I believe most university students will agree that it's something that puts a student's character to test; developing patience becomes highly essential. Now that is something that I absolutely lack and will take a long time to develop. Ironically, I am having a hard time in my favourite subject, biology. Turns out university is not like high school.

The transition from school to university has its pros and cons. I found the orientation day for freshmen rather boring but in the second week we had an event for freshmen that was held by academic advisors and it was more fun than the orientation day. We played games and had fun although our team didn't win. Food (of course! ) and welcoming goodies made the event even more better. We also had fun during the one week of cultural village at the uni.

I did not have much problem adjusting to the transition (of course after 2 or 3 awkward incidents). I have just come to know that university starts with freshmen doing quite a lot of awkward but amusing stuff. Well, let us say we all learn from experience. Comment below if you want to read about my awkward freshman start and do's and don'ts for freshmen. Back to the topic, one problem that I am facing is that a majority of the students are Arabic speaking. Though I do not speak Arabic, I do understand fifty percent of the language. Looking at the brighter side, the "wanna be polyglot" in me has been woken and wants to master Arabic. I am a bit doubtful as to whether I will accomplish this but let's give it a try...

As for food, let us say freshmen 15 is not something I have to worry about (insert sunglasses emoji). I have started to walk more now that I am in uni (that's equal to exercise ya know. Just sayin'). At school, most of my classes were in the same classroom. Every facility that I needed to access was about 5 minutes away from my classroom, but in university, my classes are in different buildings. Some of the facilities are so far that I need to take a bus to get there. Strangely, in university, I don't eat much. Sometimes I forget I am hungry and end up attending classes on an empty stomach. I live mostly on processed and junk foods. There is a gym but I haven't got time to register for it yet. I do not think I will get the time this semester as I am still lagging in biology and it is very hectic, so I have a lot to work on and study.

I do not think I have talked about my major yet. My major of interest is Bio-medical science, but in order to get selected, there are a few pre-requisites. Right now I am a general science major in the College of Science and I need to pass this semester with a grade C or above with 12 credit hours to get selected in Bio-medical science. I am taking Chemistry 101, Biology 101, English 1 and Pre-calculus this semester. Everything is okay except for Biology, but In sha Allah I'll cope with it.

I am having time management and concentration issues in university and I am trying to fix it. If the stuff that I do works out, I will share it here because I know that an overwhelmingly large amount of students face these issues. Trust me guys, I know. It's like a deep dark hole with no way out. *sniff sniff*

As for the weather, though we keep saying spring, it is more like summer in Qatar. It is burning hot here; it is also very dusty outside.

Back to blogging concerns, last weekend I did a cool DIY and would like to share it with y'all. The next post will probably be the DIY. Also, I haven't forgotten about the pending book reviews. Since it is hot and dry outside, it is the perfect weather for trying out refreshing recipes. I am trying out new ones and I might share them on here.

That's it for now. Have a nice weekend!

100 Questions that no one asks TAG!

I am a bit busy with university preparations as of late and things are going a bit roughly as I have fallen sick. Keep me in your prayers.

I'm glad I had this post ready before hand. I was tagged by Miss Zuhkey of Zuhkey's Blog to do the "100 questions that no one asks" tag. Well, she basically tagged anyone reading the post and honestly, I think it's quite fun. So here are my answers to the 100 questions. Enjoy!

Accepted or Rejected?

We all have those special moments. Those moments that decide a major part of the events that will take place in the future of your lone individual life. What happens when it's not a moment that requires YOU to decide? Nobody knows. Well, at least you don't know the impact until the decision is made. Impact - it's a small word describing something usually big.

The past Sunday morning, I woke up pretty late despite of my mother's continuous efforts to wake me up from my sweet slumber as a result of me staying awake until late the previous night. In my blurry state of mind, I was aware of what day it was. I had quietly prepared myself last night for the awaited "moment". I told myself that I wouldn't be shocked this time when I saw it, that I would gratefully accept the decision knowing it was Allah's will, that He, the Most Exalted, the All-Knowing, alone, knows what is best, and that His decisions are always in our favour. But this time, I took an extra step and made a foolproof backup plan to immediately act upon in case I got rejected by the university. (Because, previously, I didn't see it coming and when it did, I had no idea what to do).

When I woke up, I prayed for the best to happen to me. My dad called every hour from work to inquire as to if the university admission decision email had been received, only to be replied to in the negative. I assured him that the decision would only be available online at 2 pm. I was quite placid the whole morning. At least I thought I was. For some weird reason (intuition?), I decided to log in about an hour early to see if the management had decided to post the results in advance. Funny part : my heart was beating at a crazy rate. Definitely not my idea of being placid. My account kept redirecting me to some other registration form and I was freaking out. But after a couple of tries, the right page showed up. The decision (accepted/rejected) was at the bottom of the page. I scrolled down slowly and a few bold words came into my view. Pretty unexpected words. Words that I realised I had not prepared myself to react to. So I started crying.

I never shed happy tears before. This was my first time, and if my little brother wasn't in the hall, I believe I would wail like a mad person. Words can't express how grateful I was. I had finally been rewarded for my bitter patience with sweet fruits!

Yes. I finally got accepted by the university into my preferred college, Alhamdulillah. This was the longest vacation of my life and I must admit that I'll miss my sleeping routine.

My classes will most probably begin in mid February. I am excited to begin my life as a university student but also a tad bit nervous about my future obstacles. (Aren't we all? Hehe). I would also love to share my adventures along the way on the blog.

Speaking of blogging, I am absolutely ashamed of my irregularity and unfulfilled promises. I know I last blogged in October and said that I would post book review posts "pretty soon". It's been so long that I suspect most of the "first impressions" that I had mentally readied in my mind are starting to fade. However, I have made a rough draft of a book review in writing, and intend to post the edited version next, In shaa Allah.

I have written a bit about my college rejection in a previous post. You can read about it here

And if you are looking for posts to help you deal with college rejection, read 10 ways to deal with rejection from college and My one word of the year : Patience written by Miss Zuhkey. I found these personally helpful.

Also, I would like to know your thoughts on what you would like to see on the blog next.

That's it for now. Au revoir.

Eid Overview + Another Liebster Award

As the Eid holidays have come to an end, I'll give an overview of my Eid. I was looking forward to writing this post, mostly because this Eid, I planned to go out on a picnic with a good friend of mine. Most of my Eids are usually bland. I never get to do anything "fun" (It used to be fun when I was little). So I thought that this Eid would be different and the picnic would be the highlight of it. But then a family dinner invitation had to be scheduled on the same day thus ruining my excitement. Family dinners are all the same (except if the guests include your cousins, who are your age, and have the same idea of fun as you do). But this condition is a rarity, unfortunately.
Okay now let's start with the overview of my Eid.

{note: Boring entry alert}

First day...nothing fun. I didn't go anywhere. Instead I stayed home and watched a Korean drama named Unstoppable High Kick, all day with my sisters. The second day was partly a repeat of the first. On the third day, we went to MIA park. This day was disturbingly similar to the third day of Eid Ul Fitr. We went out for the sake of going out. Did nothing fun at all. While we were there, I clicked a few pictures (again, like the previous Eid ). When we got back home a while later, we skyped with cousins for a bit and then returned to watching Korean drama. The next two days aren't worth mentioning (because I don't remember what happened). On Thursday we had the dinner invitation colliding with my picnic plan and had to skip it because my mom said it might offend our host if I don't go.

Friday we watched some more of the Korean drama and finished all the episodes. So Saturday was a break. When I say break , I mean doing nothing useful.

And that was how my Eid went.

When I was little, Eid felt like Eid and it was fun. Now that I've grown up, they don't seem fun anymore because I don't get to march around the neighborhood along with an ice cream-eating kiddo party. Back then slaughtering animals on Eid was common in residential areas (Nowadays, most of them get it done in slaughter houses). So we'd get out early to watch the slaughter. And before the slaughter, we'd take turns feeding them or touching their soft fur coats. I loved sheep. I enjoyed feeding them. Eid was one of the reasons I enjoyed childhood.

Now I'm just another boring adult who doesn't anticipate special occasions.

For the second part of the post: I have been nominated (the second time now) for the Liebster award by Babra  from Eve of my Life. Thank you for the nomination dear.

For the nomination, I'll answer the 11 questions she put forward.

However, I won't nominate bloggers and put forward my 11 questions to them in this post, as I have already done so in the previous one.

1. If you had a chance to change your name to something else, what would you name yourself as?

A: I haven't ever thought of this. I like my name.

BUT if I really had to change my name to something else for a huge reason (say, keeping my identity a secret and going under an alias because I'm hiding from the cops as I committed a crime or some bizarre reason), then I'd be A'isha عائشة meaning "She who lives". But I really hope they pronounce it right with the ع instead of massacring it like most people do.

2. What makes you happy and what makes you feel sad?

A: A lot of things make me happy. A lot of things make me sad. And if for this question I have to pick out what makes me the happiest and what makes me the saddest, I do not know. I am bad at measuring emotions. But I'll tell you something that I bet you'll agree with: We all lose track of the times and things that make us happy. Either we remember little, or we don't remember at all. I think it depends on what our mood is when we are contemplating these things. Happiness lasts for a very little while and very few of us know how to cherish those moments.
While sadness and depression last longer and sometimes we let it linger on too long that we let it consume our soul. WE let it scar us. There are things I've noticed that worry me for a little while but then there are the things that fling me into depression for days and then one day I wake up feeling light, blinking like a puppy woken from a nightmare, and grin foolishly at the realization that I'm not low anymore and then I start trying to enjoy the feeling before it's gone again. It's like being drugged. Things that make me sad: Ramadan 2014 was the longest period of uneasiness for me. This was during the recent Israel Gaza conflict. I indulged too much in it, trying to stay updated on what was going on. This was a period of intense exposure to graphic images and videos that emotionally affected me. I cannot stand the thought of innocent civilians, especially children, being slaughtered, literally mutilated for any reason at all. Even recalling it makes me giddy. I can't imagine how traumatized the survivors must be. Even now, trying to live ignorantly while having the knowledge that several countries around the world are facing the toughest of times right now, doesn't seem possible. If I were to narrow down the issue and state a problem  concerning me that makes me sad, I'll say, failing to accomplish something despite of working hard to make it come true. This is my situation right now (hint: university admission). But I pray Insha'Allah things will turn out fine.
Things that make me happy: [I won't state it in any order]. Making others happy makes me happy... satisfied. Rainy days. Being outdoors on a not-so-hot-not-so-cold breezy day. See? I can't think of many...

3. Are you a hot headed person or cool minded person?

A: I am cool minded most of the time. But if someone tries to push all buttons on me, on purpose when I'm already upset about something, then they're definitely asking for it.
I can be calm as the climbing of the moon, but if anyone tries to make me like the blaring of the sun, I may as well explode. That's what's negative about me. I can't be in between. I'm always unnecessarily extreme and I pray that I learn to control it.

4. What type of people do you like to hang out with?

A: Like minded. I've been around those different to me, and never found it comfortable. I like to be with people whom I know and whom I can understand even when they're silent and vice versa. I also like to be with those who remind me of Him and they're mostly the former type of people.

5. What is your favorite food?

A: Biriyani and Haleem share the position. I love spicy food.

6. What is your addiction?

A: Procrastinating. (someone help!)

7. If you had a chance to change anything in this world, what would it be?

A: I wish everyone worked for the better of humanity and didn't fight. (make sense?)

8. Which is your favorite sport and your favorite player?

A: I like football (You can't call me a CRAZY football fan though) It's the only sport I understand. Favorite player??? From the current ones, I can't think of any. Zidane used to be my fave when he still played. He still is awesome.

9. Which moment of your life do you cherish the most?

A: Childhood. When I grew up, all the fun ended.

10. What is your ambition?

A: Had an ambition. Had. T'was, to become a doctor. Don't see it coming true anytime soon. But, Allah knows best.

11.If you had a space ship and you could take only one person with you to travel other planets, whom would you take and why?

A: If I can take only one with me, then I'd better go alone. If two, I'll take my two sisters. We're perfect as a trio.

Tadaa
